If you live in a cold climate and plan to raise chicks, you need cold, hard chickens to ensure the success of your herd. Many breeds of chicks are specially bred to withstand the cold and even thrive in the cold. 1С8
The best cold resistant breeds of chickens are chickens with small scallops and wickerwork and lots of meat on the bones. These large chicks acclimatize to the cold rather than fireflies and thin birds because they have more fat and muscles to protect them from the cold.
In winter, chickens are frozen on their bare skin. Chickens with a large comb and wickerwork are more susceptible to frostbite because their body has difficulty regulating the temperature. That’s why our chick breeds recommended for cold resistance have a small comb and a small braid.
We have compiled a long list of our favourite breeds of cold hard hens for you to make an informed decision about expanding or building a new herd.

Our favourite breeds of cold-blooded chicks:
Amerauka’s chickens lay beautiful medium sized blue eggs. They are particularly resistant to the cold because they have a polka dot comb and very small braids, making them less susceptible to freezing.
Amerikas come in many colours, including blue, buffalo, silver, brown, red, black and white. They also have a nice feathered beard under their beaks!
Australian chickens lay eggs with a medium light brown colour. They have beautiful rainbow shaped black feathers and a small simple crest with small cups.
Australian bodies are known for their taming, calmness and gentle personality. They are one of the most important egg-laying species, and most of their owners prefer them to any other breed!
Brahma chickens are a dual breed. They are long and have a lot of feathers, not only on the body but also on the feet! Brahms are known for their gentle temperament and many people keep them as pets with benefits!
Brahma chickens come in different colours, including light, buffalo and dark. They’re also raised as dwarf chickens!
Chanteklers are one of our most popular chicken breeds with cold stiffness. They have a lot of courage and personality and are often at the top of the hierarchy. This breed is often caring and they are beautiful and very protective mothers. With their pea-like crests, very small webs and large bodies, these birds are ideal for a cold climate.
Another reason why Chanteclers are excellent in cold climates is that they are one of the few breeds native to Canada and bred to be one of the coldest and heaviest chicks.
The chicken coop is one of the most diverse and beautiful breeds. First of all, they come in different colours, including partridge, silver strip, white, mottled, blue and black. There are also fluffy species, although fluffy species are slightly less resistant to frost than non fluffy species.
The pieces have a unique small comb and warm feathers on the feet to protect them from the cold. They are not the best egg layers, but they are known for their friendly personality and beautiful flowers.
Dominicans are very cold chickens because they have a small scallop of roses and large bodies that protect them from the cold.
Dominique’s chickens are gentle and very social, their personality is an excellent addition to any herd. These beautiful birds are also good layers with light brown eggs.
New Hampshire Red
This heavyweight breed feels good in cold weather, and the chickens are also well layered.
New Hampshire redheads resemble Rhode Island redheads and are often confused with the more popular breed. Although they look alike, the New Hampshire Red Chickens are much larger. These dual varieties are ideal for growing in a cold climate.
Orppington is a large bird with downy plumage and a very small single comb. The Orppington is a large laying hen and a dual breed.
They are often attentive and their friendly nature makes them beautiful mothers. This popular breed is one of our best chicken collections!
The Stained Sussex chicken breed is an ideal breed with cold stamina. They’re good layers, and we know they go straight to bed in winter. They have a full body, which makes them a good dual breed, while their large size helps them to stay warm in winter.
These birds are also good food, which will reduce the cost of food during the hottest months!
Vandota is a big rock that we found extremely cold and resistant. Vyandot has large bodies and large identities.
