How to make a portable PVC pipe chicken run

Do you want to give your chickens more freedom of movement while ensuring their safety?  Laying PVC chicken pipes can be exactly the answer.  We’ve even included a list of the parts we use so you can get started today.

Here is an easy and cheap way to give your chicks some more space so they can safely flee from predators in the air. All that is needed are a few PVC tubes and fittings and a few wires.

We want to let our chickens walk freely in the garden and give them the freedom to scratch beetles and where they want to go.  Our meter-high fences are probably more than enough to keep the chickens from coming out of the yard.  But that still makes them vulnerable to a hawk or an eagle.

To solve this problem, we needed a safe and protected space that could be moved to different parts of the yard.  It won’t be long before a group of chickens mow the lawn to bare soil.  With four chickens we decided that 50 square meters should be enough.  We also wanted them to fly on the perch, so the height of five feet inside seemed appropriate.

A PVC tube was chosen as the building material.  Although it does not protect against predators such as foxes, raccoons, dogs or other mammals, it does keep large birds away. PVC pipes are the ideal addition or complement to a chicken tractor.

A visit to our local Lowes store enabled us to find everything we needed.  (See the list of details at the end of this article)

The best thing about working with PVC parts is that everything can be put together within minutes.  All this can be mounted without using glue, tools or cutting.  The hardest part was wrapping the protective net around the frame and securing it with wire ties.  On the other hand, it made the job much easier when two people were working.

Addition of one extra perch

Chickens like perch.  This way they can be safer, see predators or other dangers before they get too close.  They also use the perch as a means to show their dominance or order.

The width of the perch must be at least 2 inches.  Unlike other birds that wrap their legs around the perch, the chicks prefer to stand on their bellies.  In this picture you can see that we used a large piece of wood 2 x 2, which is attached to a metal bracket at each end and then attached to a PVC tube frame with wire ties.  We’ve had it for over a year, and it’s holding up.

Distance from the ground is another consideration.  The minimum height is about one foot.  You want the chickens to be able to walk under it easily.  In order to reach the maximum height it is necessary to leave enough free space to prevent a collision with the grid from above.
